Terms of Service

The rules and guidelines for using CitationAPI.

Last updated: February 2025

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the CitationAPI service and website at citationapi.com. By using our service, you agree to these Terms.

1.Service Description

CitationAPI provides a REST API that generates formatted academic citations from URLs. The service extracts metadata from web pages and returns structured citation data (CSL-JSON) and pre-formatted citation strings.

2.Account Terms

  • You must provide a valid email address to create an account
  • You are responsible for maintaining the security of your API keys
  • You must not share your API keys with unauthorized parties
  • You are responsible for all activity under your account
  • You must be at least 13 years old to use this service

3.Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Exceed your plan's rate limits or attempt to circumvent them
  • Use the service for any illegal purpose
  • Reverse engineer or attempt to extract the source code of the API
  • Resell access to the API without our written consent
  • Use the service in a way that could damage, disable, or impair it
  • Submit URLs containing malware or malicious content

4.API Usage and Rate Limits

Each plan includes a specific number of API requests per month and per-minute rate limits. Exceeding these limits may result in throttled requests (HTTP 429). Repeated or egregious abuse may result in account suspension.

5.Payment and Billing

  • Paid plans are billed monthly or annually, in advance
  • You can cancel your subscription at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period
  • We do not offer refunds for partial months
  • We reserve the right to change pricing with 30 days notice
  • Free tier usage does not require payment information

6.Data and Accuracy

CitationAPI generates citations by extracting metadata from third-party web pages. While we strive for accuracy, we cannot guarantee that all citations will be perfectly formatted or contain complete information. Users should verify citations before using them in academic or professional publications.

7.Intellectual Property

The citation metadata extracted by our service is derived from publicly available web content. We do not claim ownership of the metadata content. The CitationAPI service, code, design, and documentation are our intellectual property.

8.Availability and SLA

We aim for 99.9% uptime for paid plans. Free tier availability is provided on a best-effort basis. We are not liable for downtime caused by maintenance, third-party service failures, or force majeure events.

9.Limitation of Liability

CitationAPI is provided “as is” without warranty of any kind. We shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the preceding 12 months.

10.Termination

We may suspend or terminate your account for violations of these Terms. You may delete your account at any time from your dashboard settings. Upon termination, your API keys are immediately revoked.

11.Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email to registered users at least 30 days before taking effect.
